It is a sad fact, but the truth is that the female contribution to Western society has, for the most part, been ignored – this means that, in effect, females have been hidden from history because of the absence of records. As an example, right up to very modern times, the Grove Dictionary of Music listed only the male children of the twenty children fathered by Johann Sebastian Bach. Yet his eldest child was a daughter named Catharina Dorothea, but little detail is known of her life. This novel, therefore, delves into the significant musical contribution made by the mysterious Magdalena Wilcke.
